A Guide to Montessori Materials for the Home

The Montessori Method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is renowned for its child-centered approach to education. One of its key elements is the use of specially designed materials that promote hands-on learning, independence, and self-discovery. While Montessori schools and classrooms are known for these materials, you can also create a Montessori-inspired environment in your own home.

Some specialized Montessori furniture might help when making a child-centered space to help little ones access things without you, helping them learn autonomy and resilience. A child-centered space isn't only a kids playroom or bedroom, if so desired, a whole home can be prepared in such a way that there aren't limits to where a child can be.

Floor Bed- A low bed can offer young children a safe and accessible sleeping space. Floor Beds can invite independence and freedom of movement by eliminating the constraints of traditional cribs, empowering children to learn how to listen to their bodies and self-regulate their sleep.

Weaning Set- A weaning table and chair are child-sized items specially designed for toddlers who are transitioning to solid foods. It can provide a comfortable and accessible space for young children to learn self-feeding skills and encourage independence during mealtime. A Weaning Set can also be used for fine motor activities or crafts!

Toddler Tower- A learning tower is a versatile piece of child furniture designed to safely bring young children to counter height. This can allow them to participate in otherwise out-of-reach activities, fostering hands-on learning, and encouraging independence as they work alongside adults.

Wardrobe- A Montessori wardrobe is low and open to provide young children with easy access to their clothing. A child-sized wardrobe encourages kids to not only select but also to put away their clothes, teaching them the importance of everything having a place. By presenting 2-3 weather-appropriate options, you and your child can both feel confident in their clothing choices!

Climbing Triangle- Climbing, balancing, and maneuvering around a Climbing Triangle can help enhance a child's physical AND emotional development. Its open-ended nature allows children to choose how they want to explore their body's capabilities. If you have a little climber at home, you can give them a place where they are free to move their body and test their climbing desires!

Book Display Shelf- When book covers are visible on a front-facing bookshelf, young children can easily select which books they want to look at, fostering curiosity and encouraging literacy. In addition, having a more limited number of books available allows children to practice making choices within a small selection which can help them focus on the books available.

Montessori ShelvingMontessori shelves are open and accessible that are designed to display activities and materials for little ones to explore independently. Low shelves allow children to select and engage with materials that align with their individual interests and developmental needs.

Whether you are a parent, caregiver, or educator, you can create a rich and nurturing learning environment in a home setting for your child through prepared environments. Keep in mind that the adult is the most important part of any prepared space! The materials are there to support the adult and the child in their growth together.
