The transition to a "big kid bed" can be an exciting time for parents and children alike. With that transition, though, you may be wondering about what safety measures you need to take into account. It is important to note that although some members of the Montessori community choose to implement a floor bed at a young age, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulations prevent companies from selling beds that are not enclosed as products for infants under 15 months.
Ultimately, as a parent, you'll know what's best for your child. You know how your child sleeps, and what they'll need to grow. The Montessori way promotes growth at a younger age, which can contradict with safety regulations. That's why we defer that decision to you as a parent.
We recognize there can be some level of concern when knowing what bedding is safe and appropriate for your little one. With that in mind, here are safety regulations that can guide your decision:
Keababies My Little Dreamy Pillow
Pillowfort by Target
Room Essentials by Target
Microfiber, come in a variety of colors
"We love the Target Room Essentials brand of sheets!" - @ourcrazysocks
Beddy's Bedding
All-in-one zippered bedding
Target Organic
"We use Target's organic sheet sets which fit perfectly 👌🏽" - @whatsemilyupto
Make Me Organics
"Make Me Organics has the best bedding" - @thoughts.by.mills
If you are concerned about the fit of your fitted sheet, particularly with a thinner mattress, some have found success using fitted straps to secure the sheet.
Some customers have suggested using a futon cover as a sheet because it zips snugly all the way around the mattress. If you try this, be sure to select the correct size for your mattress, as not all futons are the same size.
Futon Cover in Twin Size, $49.99
