The Montessori Placemat
A Montessori Placemat is a visual guide used when a child is learning how to set the table. Not only does this practical life activity allow a child to make a meaningful contribution to the household, but it also supports development of independence and fine motor skills.
This activity is typically taught to a child around the pre-school years but can be introduced as soon as a parent feels their child is developmentally ready! Before you introduce this activity to your child, It can be helpful to ensure that all materials that are needed are in a low cupboard that is low and accessible.
- Show your child when the placemat is used and where each item should be placed.
- Practice setting the table with your child, guiding them as they place the items on the placemat
- Encourage them to set the table independently
- Incorporate table setting into your daily routine to reinforce the skill.
