The Montessori Placemat

A Montessori Placemat is a visual guide used when a child is learning how to set the table. Not only does this practical life activity allow a child to make a meaningful contribution to the household, but it also supports development of independence and fine motor skills.

This activity is typically taught to a child around the pre-school years but can be introduced as soon as a parent feels their child is developmentally ready! Before you introduce this activity to your child, It can be helpful to ensure that all materials that are needed are in a low cupboard that is low and accessible.

  1. Show your child when the placemat is used and where each item should be placed.
  2. Practice setting the table with your child, guiding them as they place the items on the placemat
  3. Encourage them to set the table independently
  4. Incorporate table setting into your daily routine to reinforce the skill.
