All About Floor Beds
Why Choose a Floor Bed?
There are so many sleep options out there, and what is best completely depends on the unique needs of each family!
For many families, sleeping arrangements for children include a bassinet, then a crib, then a toddler bed, and eventually a twin or full-size bed. With multiple transitions in a short time, it can get expensive, time-intensive, and bring extra moments of change for your child.
A floor bed can be a simplified sleep option! They can maintain consistency as children grow and are designed to fit your child’s lifestyle for an extended time. Some Floor Beds might only be options if you only want a bed low to the ground, but Sprout beds can grow to be elevated! The Birch Floor Bed adjusts to a raised position and the Sosta Bed has the option for legs or even to become a bunk bed.
"I spent hours researching a big boy bed for my 18-month-old toddler that would give him the independence he needed while keeping him safe. I purchased the Sprout Kids Montessori Floor bed, as I loved its simple clean lines, and set it up within 20 minutes. My son has been sleeping there ever since, and it has by far been the easiest transition we have experienced during this toddlerhood phase. We both couldn’t be happier!" -Ellen, @ellenraereid
Are Floor Beds Considered Safe?
Floor Beds are generally considered safe for many homes and families, but there are a few things to consider:
- The child's age and developmental stage
- The accessibility of space the bed is in & potential hazards
- Specific safety measures such as space bedding
- Bed placement and distance from the wall
"I can’t say enough good things about this floor bed! We did the platform with 4 sides of rails and it has been the perfect sleep space for our 18 month old. The quality is outstanding and workmanship is gorgeous. Fairly easy to put it all together. For the first time ever our toddler is sleeping through the night after months of struggling with crib sleep. So glad we made the switch and to know she’s safe and cozy at night in her Sosta Bed!" -Susanna
What Mattress does a Floor Bed Need?
The specific mattress depends on preferences and needs, but there are a few things to be aware of as you pick a mattress out!
Mattress thickness- We have specific size recommendations for each frame and size. We suggest a mattress between 4-8 inches thick.
Firmness & breathability- Something to consider is your child's age and the safety regulations with firmness and breathability.
Clean-ability- A mattress cover or a waterproof mattress can be extremely helpful in the early years!
