What GREENGUARD Gold Means for Your Family
When we choose furniture for our homes, we often think about how it looks or how it functions. But there's something less visible that matters just as much: the air our children breathe.
Why indoor air quality matters so much
We spend more than 90% of our time indoors, and the air inside our homes can be 2–5 times more polluted than the air outside (according to the U.S. EPA). That’s because many common household products can release VOCs into the air, especially when new.
Some VOCs are harmless, but others can lead to symptoms like headaches, eye irritation, respiratory issues, or trigger asthma, especially in children, whose bodies are still developing.
Choosing low-emitting products is one small, powerful way to reduce that exposure and create a healthier home environment.

Is Sprout GREENGUARD certified?
Our Commitment to Transparency
What is certified? Look for the GREENGUARD Gold badge on product pages. We’re starting with our most popular and child-centered designs and plan to expand certification to more pieces over time.
Although we’ve always used low-emitting materials, formal certification requires testing each specific product configuration. This takes time, but it’s part of our long-term commitment to transparency and quality.
It is certified, but it still smells like 'new' furniture
It’s normal for new furniture, even certified pieces, to have a noticeable smell at first. This comes from the low levels of VOCs naturally present in adhesives, coatings, and other materials.
GREENGUARD Certified products emit significantly fewer of these compounds. Most importantly, the certification focuses on the compounds known to pose risks to human health, including those linked to asthma and respiratory issues. GREENGUARD Gold standards are designed with extra safety margins to help protect sensitive groups like children and infants.
The smell typically fades quickly, and you can feel confident that it’s not harmful. Still curious about what goes into our furniture? You can find more details about our materials and sustainable practices.
