Every child is different. We encourage you to observe and adapt your child’s space based on their unique abilities and needs.
Until you observe your child and have a better understanding of their abilities with the bed, we recommend a 12-inch distance from the wall when just the platform is in use. These recommendations are to avoid entrapment of your child between the wall and bed frame. Regulation states "if the bed is placed against a wall, the guardrail on that side is expected to prevent a child from being entrapped between the bed and the wall. The guardrail on the wall side of the bed must extend continuously from one end to the other."
Sprout side rails, headboards, and footboards meet the ASTM Full-size Crib guidelines found in F1169-19.

Add legs to adjust from a floor bed to a platform bed
Kolo (KOH-loh) is Finnish for a hollow, a small, sheltered space in a tree or the ground where an animal can make its home. It’s the feeling we wanted to bring to a child’s first bed: a cozy, secure place of their own, close to the ground and easy to climb into independently.
Like the little ones who sleep in it, Kolo is made to grow. It begins as a floor bed and can be raised with legs, finished with a headboard, and adjusted as your child becomes more independent. When they’re ready, the rails can be removed for an open bed.
From those first nights out of the crib to the years that follow, Kolo is designed to be a familiar place to rest, grow, and feel at home.

Small children need to have space to right themselves if they roll off the bed. For children under 18 months, do not place Low Side or Scoop Side closer than 12" away from the wall.
The High Side should be less than 1.5" or greater than 12" away from the wall. This will prevent children from getting stuck or give them space to right themselves.
Many families also baby-proof the room: secure furniture, remove distractions, be aware of safety needs like choking hazards, and use a monitor.

The CPSC advises open beds for children 15 months and older. Some families switch earlier, others wait. You know your child best with how they sleep, their room setup, and readiness. Every child is different, so observe and adapt their space to support their unique growth, safety, and independence.
