Is My Child Ready for a Big Kid Bed?

Sprout Floor Beds were designed to be low and accessible for children as they learn to regulate their sleep and listen to their body cues. Now that your child has gotten used to their floor bed, you might be wondering when is a good time to raise their bed off the ground. While every child is different, there are a few things you can consider when making this transition.

How do I know when my child is ready for a taller bed?

This transition largely depends on your child and their interest and physical abilities. If your child starts expressing interest in having a big kid bed, it doesn't always mean they are ready to switch, but it can be a good indicator of readiness. Another important prerequisite to a taller bed is that your child can climb on and off a taller bed unaided. This will ensure they can safely interact with their taller bed without requiring additional assistance. This video can help if you want to learn more from a sleep expert about signs your child is ready for a big kid bed.

Do I have to move my child to a raised bed?

No, your child does not have to have a raised bed if they prefer the floor bed position. Their comfort is the most important, and if they prefer to be low to the ground, that's okay! Some children may express a desire to sleep in a raised bed and then decide that they prefer their floor bed after it has been adjusted.

How do I raise my child's bed?

If you have the Birch Montessori Floor Bed, some disassembly will be required. For Floor Beds purchased before November 2023, the bed needs to be fully disassembled and then reassembled in the raised position. Floor Beds purchased after November 2023 will still require some disassembly, but not to the same extent. Both sets of assembly instructions can be found on our website.

If you have the Sosta Bed, you can simply remove the mattress and install the legs. If you did not purchase legs with your bed configuration, legs can be found on the Sosta Bed A La Carte page. If you are still considering your Sosta Bed purchase, it might be helpful to know that the preconfigured bundles do save you money, and the legs can be stored separately until your child is ready.
