The transition to a "big kid bed" can be an exciting time for parents and children alike. With that transition, though, you may be wondering about what safety measures you need to take into account. It is important to note that although some members of the Montessori community choose to implement a floor bed at a young age, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulations prevent companies from selling beds that are not enclosed as products for infants under 15 months.

Ultimately, as a parent, you'll know what's best for your child. You know how your child sleeps, and what they'll need to grow. The Montessori way promotes growth at a younger age, which can contradict with safety regulations. That's why we defer that decision to you as a parent.

We recognize there can be some level of concern when knowing what bedding is safe and appropriate for your little one. With that in mind, here are safety regulations that can guide your decision:

  1. Sheets: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends using only a tightly-fitted sheet for at least the first year of life.

  2. Blankets: There is no official age that's been deemed 100 percent safe to use a blanket, quilt, or comforter, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), but most medical experts feel that soft bedding poses little danger in the crib to healthy babies after 12 months of age and ideally when they're 18 months or older.

  3. Pillows: "It's safe for a child to use a pillow once they are at least 2 years old and sleeping in a bed," says Lauren Crosby, M.D., F.A.A.P. of La Peer Pediatrics in Los Angeles, California.

  4. Stuffed animals: For infants, it is considered unsafe to have loose items such as pillows in the crib with them, and this also translates to stuffed animals.

Futon Covers:

Some customers have suggested using a futon cover as a sheet because it zips snugly all the way around the mattress. If you try this, be sure to select the correct size for your mattress, as not all futons are the same size.
