By including it in their space, you can support decision-making, independence, and personal expression, all key elements of a Montessori environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

There isn’t a specific age to introduce a Montessori wardrobe, as children can benefit from one anywhere from infancy through the preschool years.

Families who start using it in infancy often appreciate the consistency as their child grows. Others may wait until their child shows signs like having opinions on what they wear, fighting getting dressed, or a willingness/ability to self-dress.

A Montessori wardrobe supports independence by giving children access to a small, manageable selection of clothing they can choose from on their own. Getting dressed is a big part of the day for a child!

There are so many decisions involved, and it can be exciting to make these choices. The options can be overwhelming when they have access to their entire wardrobe. With a small wardrobe like this, you can provide limited options and still allow independence.

The purpose of the Alba Montessori Wardrobe is to provide a few select options of clothes that are completely accessible to the child. This can be achieved with a closet or clothing rack if the clothes are low enough for a child to reach, and if most of the clothes are packed elsewhere.

Too many options can overwhelm the child, and this kid's wardrobe serves as a display place for the day's options of clothes. It works best with a clothing rotation, similar to a toy rotation with Montessori shelves!

The wardrobe works best with a limited selection of clothes. Children can be overwhelmed by too many options, and the purpose of the wardrobe is to help them dress themselves, starting with the choice of what to wear. It is recommended to store other clothes elsewhere, such as in the closet or dresser, and to rotate clothing options through the wardrobe, similar to a toy rotation with Montessori shelves.

The designs of the raw and finished birch wardrobes are identical. The only difference is the finishing that is added to the wood. If you live in a humid climate, you may want to consider the finished birch wardrobe for the best use and longevity. Read more about the difference in materials here: https://sprout-kids.com/pages/eco-friendly-kids-furniture

Due to the size and weight of the Alba Montessori wardrobe, we recommend that it be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping. Each wardrobe comes with a free wall anchoring kit.

Stories

In infancy: Clothing is visible and available before a child can dress themselves, supporting early awareness and visual order while helping parents establish calm, consistent care routines.

In toddlerhood: Children begin choosing outfits and participating in dressing, building confidence and independence, while reducing daily friction around getting dressed.

In early childhood: The wardrobe adapts as children manage their own clothing, strengthening self-care and responsibility while minimizing power struggles and supporting smoother mornings.

Empowering Independence: Functional and Stylish Wardrobe

As a parent who values both functionality and aesthetics in children's furniture, I can confidently recommend the Alba Montessori Children's Wardrobe. We purchased the Wide version in Finished Birch when our son was 18 months old, and it has been an integral part of his room for over a year.

One of the standout features of this wardrobe is its thoughtful design. The low height allows our 30-month-old son to independently access his clothes, fostering his sense of independence and self-reliance. The open shelving encourages him to make choices and learn to organize his belongings—an essential skill for his development.

Moreover, the wardrobe's sturdy construction assures us of its durability. Despite our son's occasional rough handling, the wardrobe has held up remarkably well without any signs of wear and tear. The eco-friendly materials used in its construction align with our values as environmentally conscious parents.

From a design standpoint, the Montessori Wardrobe seamlessly blends into our son's room decor. Its minimalist aesthetic and neutral color palette complement various interior styles, making it a versatile addition to any child's room.

What sets this wardrobe apart is how it empowers our son to make his own choices when selecting his outfits. The open shelving allows him to see all his clothes at a glance, enabling him to independently choose his shirt, bottoms, socks, and even his shoes. This process fosters his decision-making skills and boosts his confidence as he takes charge of his daily routine.

Furthermore, the packaging of the Alba Montessori Wardrobe was excellent, with clear instructions that made assembly straightforward. Within a short time, we had the wardrobe ready for use, adding to the overall positive experience of purchasing this product.

We've thoroughly enjoyed the wardrobe, but I'd like to mention a potential downside. We purchased the version without legs because we wanted the wide version, thinking we could add the legs later when he grew. We were disappointed when we received it when we realized there were no holes on the bottom to add legs later. Though it hasn't posed a significant issue now, the inability to add legs later limits the wardrobe's design flexibility, and had we known this, we would have gone with the Finished Birch with Legs.

Adding legs later would offer more versatility, especially as our son grows and his room layout may change. Hopefully, Sprout Kids will make this version with removable legs or, even better, make all the designs with removable legs the only option available. It would address this concern and give customers more flexibility in customizing their wardrobes to suit their needs.

I suggest explicitly stating that the Wide version of the wardrobe does not have the option to add legs. Offering the option with removable legs would enhance its long-term usability and appeal to a broader range of customers.

In conclusion, the Montessori Wardrobe for Kids from Sprout Kids combines functionality, durability, and style—all essential qualities we look for in children's furniture. It has facilitated our son's growing independence and organizational skills while seamlessly integrating into his room's design. We couldn't be happier with our purchase.

Get organized!

We love how this wardrobe inspires our daughter to dress herself and to keep her things organized. This piece looks great with the 6 cube shelf since the legs match. So pretty!

Checks all the boxes

Our second Sprout purchase - and we were again impressed by the ease to assemble and quality of the product. I don’t mind paying for quality when it bypasses the usual mayhem/cussing of assembling furniture with terrible directions and missing parts. (Especially when I’m in third trimester nesting mode!)

No doubt this wardrobe will last through our younger kids and beyond. I like how the shelves are easily adjustable after the fact.

Perfect for Toddlers

It arrived faster than I anticipated. It was easy to put together and best of all my toddler loves it. He wants to wear everything at once but he’s enjoying helping decide what to wear.

Attractive and offers.choice

This little wardrobe looks beautiful in my 15-month-old's nursery. We bought it when we decorated the nursery because it was an attractive piece that we knew we wanted to make room for, and now that he is walking, he loves going over and picking out his own outfits. I also loved how easily and securely it anchored to the wall. Totally worth the splurge!

great buy

we have loved our wardrobe. We got it for our eldest when he was a toddler transitioning from his baby dresser to a regular closet. It gave him independence and helped foster a lot of skills when putting away and taking out clothing. The design is well thought out as well. Now he has moved on from this to something that better fits his needs as a 6 year old, however we used the wardrobe for a bit with his sister and now find use in it to store some educational materials such as books or math loose parts that he likes to use in his room. I imagine over the years to come it will be continued to be used it different ways which made it a great buy for our family.

Frustrating assembling experience

The assembly is much more complicated than it looks, and the user manual is not very intuitive to navigate either. Took two adults almost two hours to assemble it. The quality of the wood is good, but the assembly mechanism adds lots of frustration. I wish the product is more user friendly when it comes to assembly.

Wonderful Wardrobe

As my daughter got older, we wanted her to be able to pick out her own clothes if she wanted to. This wardrobe is perfect for that! Not only does it allow us to store clothes in a variety of ways, but we love having the mirror on the end, and the hooks on the other side for things like hats and bags. Very good quality and can tell it will hold up for years to come. Highly recommend!

So cute and functional

I got this wardrobe for my 18 month old son. It is a great addition for his room. It is currently winter in MN and I have his coats, sweatshirts, gloves, mittens and winter shoes in the wardrobe. He is able to grab his shoes and other items by himself and make a choice for what he wears. It is so functional and love that you can adjust the position of the shelves and hanging rod. I also purchased a couple of bins to add to the wardrobe. One is being used as a laundry basket and it is nice that my son is able to put dirty items in it himself. This is the cutest edition to his room that will grow with him. The quality is impeccable, and I love that they use minimal screws (only the optional pegs). It was very easy to assemble.

Best Little Wardrobe

I bought the finished no-leg standard size for my 20 month old and she is still using it at 4 years old. Being able to have agency in choosing her clothes has also helped foster the desire to put her clothes away. It was easy to put together on my own, and adjusting the height of the bar and shelves was also easy. Now that her younger brother is a toddler and starting to help put some of her clothes away (and "help" take the clothes down) we are going to assemble his soon. One star off because the product arrived in a coat of sawdust (annoying but easily cleaned and Sprout support provided reasonable reparation), one hole for the highest level for the bar was too narrow (had to shave some off, could not friction wiggle it into place but also would have functioned fine with the slight angle), and the pegs were a real pain to screw in. I did provide feedback and support team was very interested in taking in the issues to improve their process. My rating might change if we discover my son's wardrobe has issues as well but three years of usage and it is lovely and sturdy and holds up. I will be sad when both kids outgrow these.

Worth It

This was by far the biggest “splurge” item in our sons room but I’m so glad we got it. It fits perfectly in his closet and has allowed him to put away his clothes and get dressed independently since he was 3 (now 5.5). Granted things aren’t always folded like Marie Kondo and he likes to mix up what goes where but that’s autonomy I will grant him anyday! It was beyond easy to put together and mount to the wall.

My clothes loving daughter loves it!

I have been looking at the wardrobe for awhile and saw a finished birch one in stock in the value grade collection. I have purchased several non-value grade products from Sprout Kids and they are all beautiful, but I was hesitant to try the value grade products. I went for it and was very happy I did. There are chips on one wood shelf and one other small dent, but honestly, once it was built and had clothes on the shelves I never would have known the flaws were there. My daughter has been having way less meltdowns with choosing clothes for daycare and has loved having access to a few hanging items as well. Extra bonus for parents is the top is a great shelf for items you want out of reach from smaller toddlers.

Good for small spaces

I found this a breeze to put together with a rubber mallet. Without one, I imagine it would be hard to get the pieces together. I holds my daughter's entire (limited) wardrobe, and it's easy for her to help get her clothes in and out of the bins. I like that it's really shallow since her room is narrow and space is precious. I wanted soft cloth bins for the shelves, and found these relatively inexpensive ones from Target: https://www.target.com/p/11-34-decorative-coiled-rope-square-base-tapered-basket-with-leather-handles-small-white-brightroom-8482/-/A-53193307#lnk=sametab that fit perfectly.

Great quality

We love our Sprout Alba Montessori Wardrobe and our little one agrees. I only wanted to provide the right environment for her. She started using the wardrobe around 16 months old. Love watching her picking out her morning outfit before going to school and putting away clothes after doing laundry together. We love all Sprout Montessori furniture due to the high quality and functional design. The round edges, solid wood and minimal connecting pieces makes us feel safe while letting her use it freely. I would recommend this wardrobe to anyone who has kids and desire to promote independence. It doesn’t just look pretty but highly functional, as you can be very creative with the layout that suits your little ones everyday life.

Helps with dressing battles

This nice little wardrobe makes it easy for my two year old to pick what she wants to wear. A few things to note:
— It’s quite petite. For me this is a “pro” because my daughter’s room is small and having a small wardrobe encourages me not to over- buy clothing. But it won’t fit all of those clothes a typical toddler has.
— You really need a mallet to put it together. I tried a hammer wrapped in a blanket, but when I got a mallet it went so much easier.
— someone else mentioned that baskets are hard to find. These fit perfectly, though they cost more than I’d prefer: https://mdesignhomedecor.com/hyacinth-pantry-storage-basket-10-5-x-10-5-x-5-25/

Perfect to foster independence

This wardrobe is just the perfect size for toddlers and hound children.
I was looking for something that would allow my daughter to have a sense of independence but at the same time to be pretty enough to be a stand alone piece and I was so excited when I saw this!

Great wardrobes with some caveats

This wardrobe is beautiful and functional. It is not advertised well but it tilts a little backwards so it is not as easy to fall forwards which I think is great.
As other reviewers said, I couldn't attach the side pegs as the hole was too small. I may pierce another hole but I just didn't bother for now as it didn't seem necessary.

The most annoying thing about it is finding little containers that fit the shelves. Before you buy, think about if you want little containers or not, because if you so, beware because the size is not standard especially the depth. It has a short depth which is ok for a child's furniture but it was super difficult to find containers that would fit it.
I finally found some that fit great! The "Like-it-Bricks" 11'' collection from the Container store is perfect for this wardrobe, there are two sizes that fit (small and a little higher), so I hope someone sees this and doesn't spend as much time as me measuring containers! I got the transparent ones and it looks awesome. It is a little pricy so you would have to add that to the cost of the wardrobe.
If the people that uploaded some photos would also give some tips on where they bought their containers, that would help also!

Love it

This wardrobe is incredibly cute and functional. It has plenty of space for all of my babies clothes. We also keep books on top. It was a little challenging to put together but not a big deal especially relative to other furniture stores. We love that it is made in the USA and is very thoughtful and matches any decor. Thank you!

Excellent

My 19mo old toddler and I love this wardrobe. I recently made the decision to purchase this wardrobe and move the large c&b dresser we originally went with into the closet - best decision! This piece is ideal for anyone trying to create a Montessori environment for their LO. I was a little apprehensive after reading reviews about putting it together and I read the directions three times (lol) instead of just pulling up the video, but once I got started this went together easily and quickly. Quick tip if you plan on buying more than one piece of Sprout furniture get yourself a rubber mallet, just makes it a little easier. The anchors are a must for us, my LO immediately tried to pull it over upon seeing it, once he realized he couldn’t all was fine. This is a wonderful addition to our set up - highly recommend!!
