Montessori Bed with Rails that Supports Independence

Designed to grow with your child, this Montessori floor bed with rails adapts to each stage. The Sparrow Bed is crafted from solid wood and is GREENGUARD Gold certified to be a kids' bed that can adapt to their needs
  • Inspired by Montessori: The low-to-the-ground design supports an easier transition out of the crib, giving little ones the freedom to move, explore, and settle on their own.
  • Adapts as they grow: Start with rails for added security, then remove them and add legs when needed to easily transition to a big kid bed.
  • Built to last: Designed with solid wood and has an intentionally high weight capacity (500–650 lbs), making it strong enough for co-sleeping and years of everyday use.

Care & Safe Use

Every child is different. We encourage you to observe and adapt your child’s space based on their unique abilities and needs.

Until you observe your child and have a better understanding of their abilities with the bed, we recommend a 12-inch distance from the wall when just the platform is in use.  These recommendations are to avoid entrapment of your child between the wall and bed frame. Regulation states "if the bed is placed against a wall, the guardrail on that side is expected to prevent a child from being entrapped between the bed and the wall. The guardrail on the wall side of the bed must extend continuously from one end to the other."

Sprout side rails, headboards, and footboards meet the ASTM Full-size Crib guidelines found in F1169-19.

Mattress Information

We recommend a mattress between 6-12 inches thick

Use the height calculator to determine the bed height depending on your mattress thickness.

Toddler Bed with Rails

Is a Montessori bed with rails truly Montessori aligned?

It can be! The only essential element of a Montessori bed is accessibility for the child. As long as a child can get in and out on their own, rails can provide a balance between freedom of movement and safety.

Sprout side rails, headboards, and footboards are compliant with CPSC crib slat spacing guidelines

The CPSC advises open beds for children 15 months and older. Some families switch earlier, others wait. You know your child best with how they sleep, their room setup, and readiness. Every child is different, so observe and adapt their space to support their unique growth, safety, and independence.

Small children need to have space to right themselves if they roll off the bed. For children under 18 months, do not place Low Side or Scoop Side closer than 12" away from the wall.

The High Side should be less than 1.5" or greater than 12" away from the wall. This will prevent children from getting stuck or give them space to right themselves.

Many families also baby-proof the room: secure furniture, remove distractions, be aware of safety needs like choking hazards, and use a monitor.

The name was suggested by a customer and then voted on by our audience. The analogy of sparrows and kids highlights themes of nurturing, growth, and freedom. Parent sparrows build a secure nest, feed their young, and teach them to fly, mirroring how parents nurture children to become independent adults. Sparrows represent joy, resilience, and the transition from home safety to independence

Great floor bed

We’re very happy with the Sparrow bed. It feels sturdy and well made, and it looks beautiful in the room. The design is simple and timeless, and the quality has been great so far. Overall, we’re very pleased with the purchase and would definitely recommend it.

One bed for every stage, it’s perfect!

We are beyond excited about Walter’s new bed. It’s ideal for co-sleeping and helping him fall asleep, safe and comfortable for all of us, and he’ll have it forever! Just like all of our Sprout products, we can change the configuration to meet his needs as he grows.

Love it

Love this bed! Durable construction, easy to put together, attractive, and thoughtfully designed. My husband, toddler, and I can all fit on the twin bed to read books together, and the height with legs is comfortable for adults and toddler. I love that there aren't sharp edges or corners, making it safe for rowdy kids, but it doesn't look childish. This bed should last well into my kid's teen years!

Good Wood Quality - Frustrating Assembly for Price Point

Wood quality was certainly noticeably better that cheaper options you see online. Solid wood, nicely sanded & finished. The only downside was I thought for the price point that the side rails, front headboard and foot board would be be assembled vs. having to put together all the dowels. In theory the instructions made sense but there is an over-reliance on the rubber-bands being a cure-all for helping bringing the sides together. I needed to get my husband involved and he wasn't pleased at being roped into my project.

Great bed frame for toddler!

Great bed frame for toddler!

Love how low to the ground it is for my almost 2 year old and that it is customizable for the future if we want to add components. Assembly was not difficult.

Mixed feelings on this bed

While I appreciate that the bed is made with no plastic, the construction and engineering of the bed is not easy. Each slat and pole need to be placed individually, which makes this a definite 2 person job despite the rubber bands they provide to hold the bed together. The additional insert which is separate from the provided instruction booklet makes construction more difficult. The bed feels somewhat sturdy once everything is constructed and also feels like it is handmade as things don't totally fit together, which makes it tough for someone with mild OCD. But overall, it is a nice bed and looks as pictured.

Customer service is really great and they offered to jump on a video call to help. They were also very responsive!

Loves his big boy bed!

This was our son's first big boy bed, and he easily transitioned over and loves it! It's not too tall that I worry about him falling off, and was designed well so it assembled easily.

The perfect transition to a big-kid bed!

My 4-year-old is OBSESSED with their new bed! We started with the Sprout Montessori floor bed and then transitioned to the Sparrow with legs, but if this had been available when my kiddo was younger, this would have been our first choice. The legs are not super high off the ground, but there's decent storage space underneath (more than with the original floor bed when that one is flipped to be platform style).

The quality is what you expect from this brand, very sturdy and well-made, and fairly easy to assemble. I love that the birch wood matches all of our other Sprout furniture in my kiddo's room too!

Inez

Hi,
If I purchase the option with legs, rails, and headboards does it only assemble that one way? Wondering if I can assemble it without legs and add the legs only when my kid is ready for them.
Seems cheaper to purchase the whole frame kit vs later buying additional parts à la cart. Is that correct?
Thank you!

Warmly, Inez

Sprout

Hi Inez,
Thank you for reaching out to us! These are excellent questions. If you order the bed with legs, rails, and headboards, you can assemble it with or without the legs and siderails, though you would need a separate end cap to assemble without the headboards. The bed's modular design is intended to help you adjust the style of your bed to meet your child's needs through various stages of growth, and pieces can be attached or removed as often as you need or want.
It is correct that it is cheaper to order the whole kit rather than purchasing additional pieces a la carte. This is because we are able to ship things together in a single box if you order the whole frame, and we pass the savings on shipping cost along to you.

What is the minimum mattress length that is recommended for the Sparrow twin bed?

Sprout

Hi Jen,
We recommend using a mattress with a minimum length of 74.5" and a maximum length of 76". This is allow enough space for blankets and sheets without leaving so much room that there is a risk of entrapment. The standard size of a twin mattress is 38"x75", so you should be able to find a mattress within that range without too much trouble. If you have any other questions, please email our support team at support@sprout-kids.com!

How far are the legs from the edges of the bed? Or said another way, what is the space between the legs? I want to make sure it will fit around some floor vents in my son's room.

Sprout

Hi,
Along the length of the bed, the legs are about 58" apart. Along the width of the bed, they are about 36" apart. These measurements are for the Twin Bed. If you have any other questions, please contact our Support Team by emailing support@sprout-kids.com.

Sparrow v.S.

We already have a Sosta bed. What is the difference between the Sparrow and the Sosta? Why might someone choose one over the other?

Sprout

Thank you for reaching out to us! This is an excellent question. The main differences are in materials, side and headboard height, assembly, and price. For the materials, this bed is offered in maple and walnut, whereas the Sosta is only offered in red oak. The sideboards and headboards are 19" and 22" for the Gentle Bed, whereas they are 16" and 14" on the Sosta Bed, which enables you to use thicker mattresses while still having the security of the sides being high enough to help prevent children rolling out of bed. In terms of assembly, the Gentle Bed uses fewer screws, but does require more assembly overall. This helps us use smaller and fewer packages to ship you the bed, and greatly reduces the price in comparison to the Sosta Bed. I hope this helps, but if you have any other questions, please email our support team at support@sprout-kids.com!
