Freedom of movement for little sleepers.

A floor bed can be a great way to encourage autonomy and freedom in the early developmental stages of your child’s life.

With the Montessori Floor Bed, your child can enter and leave independently, letting them regulate their sleep according to their body's needs. This freedom of movement helps children learn about physical boundaries and develop spatial awareness while staying safe thanks to the bed's low height.

Bed Sides

1 Low + 1 High Side is for beds arranged with a side against the wall. Put the high side next to the wall to help prevent wedging for children who roll in their sleep. If you arrange your bed with the head against the wall instead of a side, we recommend two Low Sides unless you plan to move it against the wall at some point.

2 Low Sides is ideal for beds arranged with the head of the bed against a wall. The Low Side has a wide entry point that goes along the entire side of the bed. Children will be able to climb in and out of bed safely in order to engage with their surroundings.

Scooped Sides shorten the entry point for children to climb off and on. Some parents find this helps for children who are attached to the support that their crib provides.

The Scoop Right Side has a high section on the left side and a scooped entrance on the right side. The child will sleep with their head by the high side with their feet by the scooped entrance.
The Scoop Left Side has a high section on the right side and a scooped entrance on the left side. The child will sleep with their head by the high side with their feet by the scooped entrance.

Each configuration can be adjusted to a taller, platform setting as children grow older and are ready for a taller "big kid" bed. Depending on the size of the mattress, the bed can last through their teenage years.

Safe & Effective Use

It is important for small children to have space to right themselves after rolling off the bed. For children under 18 months, do not place Low Side or Scoop Side closer than 12" away from the wall.

The High Side should be less than 1.5" or greater than 12" away from the wall. This will either prevent children from getting stuck or give them space to right themselves.

Our customers have found the following tips helpful in making their children's rooms safe and conducive to sleep with the Floor Bed:

  • Secure all furniture
  • Keep the bedroom minimal
  • Put something on the floor to cushion fall (body pillow, foam play mat, sheepskin, folded blanket)
  • Remove distracting toys
  • Use short curtains
  • Cover outlets
  • Switch the door lock around or use a baby gate
  • Use a baby monitor with a video

FAQ

At what age should I transition my child to a floor/toddler bed?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises beds “intended to provide free access and egress to a child not less than 15 months of age.” These regulations prevent companies from selling beds that are not entirely enclosed as products for children under 15 months. Many families choose to switch their child earlier than 15 months while others choose to wait. We believe that you'll know what's best for your child. You know how your child sleeps, how their room is set up, what they'll need to grow and what you're comfortable with. Every child is different. We encourage you to observe and adapt your child’s space based off of their unique abilities and needs.

How can I help my child make the transition to a floor bed?

Read community feedback about their experiences transitioning to a floor bed as well as a sleep expert's advice below.

When is the best time to adjust the bed from the low to the high orientation?

The high orientation raises the mattress an additional 5 inches off the floor. The best time to adjust the bed is when your child feels comfortable getting into the bed independently with the additional height.

What mattress fits the best with this bed frame?

We suggest a mattress thickness of 4-8 inches to ensure that the mattress does not sit above the high or scoop side of the frame. We recommend the following mattress dimensions for a safe and comfortable fit in our bed frames:

Crib / Toddler Frame
Mattress: 52"L x 28"W

Twin Frame
Mattress: 75"L x 38"W

Full-size Frame
Mattress: 75"L x 54"W

We suggest a mattress thickness of 4-8 inches to ensure that the mattress does not sit above the high or scoop side of the frame.

Product Updates

Recently, the Floor Bed's slats were changed from birch slats to a slat roll crafted from red oak in order to increase the strength of the frame and ease of assembly. Please note that with this change, the slats are now positioned slightly higher, raising the mattress within the frame by 1.2 inches

Loved it for my older one, got it for the baby.

It's my second purchase of full size bed. I thought first bed was great. Well, second one (five years later) is even better! It was SO much easier to assemble the newer version. I got it done by myself in one sitting in no time.
The bed we bought 5 years ago is just like new, so I am pretty sure this one will hold up as well.

Best bed for my toddler

We had this bed in the crib size for our older son, and now that he's grown out of it - it was passed to his little sister, and he now enjoys the same bed in larger size. This is a high quality, easy to assemble bed, they can go in and out of the bed easily, and even if they roll off at night - it's low enough. Highly recommend it.
