We understand that transitioning to a floor bed can raise a lot of questions, from the benefits to the practicalities. Whether you’re wondering about safety, sleep routines, or choosing the right bed, we’re here to provide the answers you need.

How do I make the room safe for my child with a floor bed?

Here are some safety tips to ensure your child’s room is safe as they explore:

  • Keep electrical cords and wires out of reach.
  • Cover electrical outlets.
  • Secure blind cords away from their reach.
  • Remove any choking hazards and unsafe objects.
  • Anchor heavy furniture.

What if my child falls out of the floor bed?

It’s not uncommon for children to roll off a floor bed at first. When setting up their room, be sure to provide enough space for them to move freely and safely right themselves if they roll off.

Since the bed is low to the ground, the fall is minimal, no higher than the mattress itself. If you're concerned, you can place a soft playmat next to the bed for a gentler landing.

What type of mattress is best for a floor bed?

A firm, supportive mattress is best for a floor bed. It should fit snugly in the frame without any gaps.

When is the right time to transition to a floor bed?

The right time to transition depends on your child’s development and readiness.

Maria Montessori says children’s beds should be resting practically upon the floor, where he can lie down and get up as he wishes.”

The government shares that U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises beds “intended to provide free access and egress to a child not less than 15 months of age.” Due to this, these regulations prevent companies, like us, from selling beds that are not enclosed as products for infants under 15 months.

Many families choose to switch their child between 6 and 18 months, once they start rolling, crawling, or standing. However, every child is different, so consider your child’s individual milestones and comfort level.

Ultimately, as a parent, you'll know what’s best for your child.

Will their sleep be disrupted?

Humans thrive on consistency, so the transition to a floor bed may be challenging at first. During the initial weeks, your child may explore their room rather than sleeping in the bed. Over time, they will adjust, and bedtime will become less exciting as they start tuning into their body’s natural sleep signals.
